H-shaped I-beam, also known as wide flange I-beam, HW HM HN originates from European standards, while HEB is a German standard I-beam. During this period, HW and HN I-beams have been widely used and produced in China. HEA HEB HEM can be seen on many German planning maps and is still difficult to purchase in the domestic market. In domestic steel structure engineering, if the quantity is small, steel plates with equivalent specifications can be used for welding and splicing. For large quantities, it is generally considered to use mechanical functions and appropriate HW and HN steel to replace them

HW I-beams are primarily used for steel core columns in reinforced concrete structural columns, also known as rigid steel columns; In steel structures, it is primarily used for columns, with HM steel having a height and flange width share of approximately 1.33~1.75. It is primarily used as a steel column in steel structures and as a structural beam in structures that receive dynamic loads; For example, in equipment channels, the share of HN steel height and flange width is equal to or greater than 2, primarily used for beams.

The use of general I-beam is suitable for HN type steel; I-shaped steel, whether general or lightweight, can only be directly used for components that are bent in the plane of their web or to form lattice load-bearing components due to the relatively high and narrow cross-sectional dimensions, resulting in a significant difference in the moment of inertia between the two main axes of the cross-section. It is not suitable to choose axial compression components or components with twists and turns perpendicular to the web plane, which greatly limits their application scale.

H-shaped steel belongs to the category of efficient and economical cutting profiles (including cold-formed thin-walled steel, profiled steel plates, etc.), because of their reasonable cross-sectional shape, they can enhance the efficiency of the steel and improve its load-bearing capacity. Unlike the general I-beam, the flange of the H-beam has been widened, and the inner and outer surfaces are generally parallel, making it easier to connect with other components using high-strength bolts. Its scale composition series is reasonable, with complete types, making it easy to plan and choose.
