Classification of H-shaped steel

There are many product specifications for H-shaped steel, and there are several classification methods. (1) According to the flange width of the product, it is divided into wide flange, medium flange, and narrow flange H-shaped steel. The flange width B of H-shaped steel with wide and medium flanges is greater than or equal to the web height H. The flange width B of narrow flange H-shaped steel is approximately half of the web height H. (2) According to product usage, it is divided into H-shaped steel beams, H-shaped steel columns, H-shaped steel piles, and extremely thick flange H-shaped steel beams. Sometimes parallel leg channel steel and parallel flange T-shaped steel are also included in the scope of H-shaped steel. Generally, narrow flange H-shaped steel is used as the beam material, and wide flange H-shaped steel is used as the column material. Therefore, it is also known as beam H-shaped steel and column H-shaped steel. (3) According to production methods, it is divided into welded H-beams and rolled H-beams. (4) Divided into large, medium, and small H-beams according to size specifications. Products with a web height H of over 700mm are usually referred to as large, products with a height of 300-700mm are referred to as medium, and products with a height H of less than 300mm are referred to as small. By the end of 1990, the world's largest H-beam had a web height of 1200mm and a flange width of 530mm.

Internationally, the product standards for H-beams are divided into two categories: English system and metric system. Countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom use the British system, while countries such as China, Japan, Germany, and Russia use the metric system. Although the units of measurement used in the British and metric systems are different, H-beams are mostly represented by four dimensions: web height h, flange width b, web thickness d, and flange thickness t. Although countries around the world have different ways of expressing the size specifications of H-beams. But the range of size specifications and dimensional tolerances of the products produced are not significantly different.
